Why Apple Products Have Become More Expensive in India: The AI Chip Boom Explained

Buying a new MacBook or iPad in India has become significantly more expensive. Apple has raised the prices of several products, including MacBooks, iPads, HomePods, Apple TV devices, and desktop Macs. The increase is not because of new taxes or import duties, but due to a global shortage of memory chips caused by the explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Apple, the cost of memory and storage components has risen dramatically over the past year as AI companies continue to build massive data centers. After absorbing these costs for several months, the company has now passed part of the increase on to consumers. India has witnessed some of the steepest price hikes among major markets, with certain products becoming up to 70% more expensive.

How AI Is Driving Prices Higher

The rapid expansion of generative AI has created unprecedented demand for DRAM memory and NAND storage chips. Companies such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure, purchasing enormous quantities of high-performance memory for data centers.

As chip manufacturers prioritize these high-value AI orders, the supply available for consumer electronics has tightened significantly. Industry reports indicate that DRAM prices jumped by nearly 98% during the first quarter of 2026 and are expected to rise further, creating a ripple effect across the technology industry.

Which Apple Products Are Affected?

The price increases apply to MacBooks, iPads, Mac desktop computers, HomePods, and Apple TV devices sold in India. Premium MacBook Pro and desktop Mac models have seen particularly large increases, while several iPad models have also become more expensive.

Interestingly, Apple has not increased iPhone prices yet. Analysts believe the company is protecting its most important product category while monitoring component costs before making any future pricing decisions.

Why India Saw Bigger Price Hikes

Although Apple has raised prices globally, India has experienced some of the highest increases. Industry experts believe this reflects a combination of higher component costs, currency movements, logistics expenses, and regional pricing adjustments. Even though many iPhones are now manufactured in India, Macs and iPads continue to depend heavily on imported components that are affected by global semiconductor prices.

Not Just Apple

Apple is not the only company facing rising costs. PC makers, gaming console manufacturers, and electronics brands across the world are experiencing similar pressure as AI companies consume an increasing share of global memory production. Analysts expect prices of laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices to remain elevated until memory supply catches up with demand.

What It Means for Consumers

For Indian consumers, purchasing a MacBook or iPad now requires a higher budget than just a few months ago. Students, professionals, creators, and businesses planning to upgrade their devices may need to compare configurations carefully or wait for promotional offers.

The situation also highlights an unexpected consequence of the AI revolution. While artificial intelligence is transforming industries and creating new opportunities, it is simultaneously increasing the cost of everyday technology by putting enormous pressure on the global semiconductor supply chain. As AI infrastructure continues to expand worldwide, the pricing of consumer electronics is likely to remain closely tied to the availability of advanced memory chips.
