WhatsApp Username Feature Faces Government Scrutiny in India: Here’s Why

WhatsApp has begun rolling out its new Username feature, allowing users to connect without sharing their mobile numbers. The feature is designed to improve privacy by letting users communicate using a unique username instead of a phone number. However, the rollout has sparked concerns in India, where WhatsApp has the world’s largest user base.

India has more than 850 million WhatsApp users, making it the platform’s biggest market globally. Because of this massive user base, any major feature introduced on WhatsApp has significant implications for digital safety, cybersecurity, and online fraud.

What Is the Username Feature?

The new feature allows users to reserve a unique username, similar to Instagram, Telegram, or X (formerly Twitter). Instead of sharing a phone number, users can simply share their username to start a conversation. This adds an extra layer of privacy, especially when chatting with people outside your contact list.

Why Is the Government Concerned?

According to reports, the Indian government has sought clarification from WhatsApp regarding the feature before its wider rollout. Authorities are examining whether usernames could make it easier for cybercriminals to impersonate government officials, police officers, celebrities, or well-known personalities.

Experts believe fraudsters could create misleading usernames that appear genuine and use them to contact unsuspecting users. Since victims would see only a username instead of an unfamiliar phone number, impersonation scams could become more convincing.

Cyber Fraud Risks

India already faces a large number of cyber fraud cases originating through messaging platforms. Officials are concerned that usernames may make phishing, financial scams, fake customer support, and digital arrest scams more difficult to identify.

Although WhatsApp continues to use phone numbers internally for account verification, authorities want to understand how user identities will be verified and what safeguards exist to prevent fake or misleading usernames.

Privacy vs Security

The username feature is intended to improve user privacy by reducing the need to share personal phone numbers. This is particularly useful for businesses, creators, freelancers, and community groups.

However, cybersecurity experts argue that stronger privacy should also be accompanied by robust verification systems, reporting mechanisms, and anti-impersonation protections to prevent misuse.

How to Reserve Your Username

If the feature has reached your account, open WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Username. Choose an available username and confirm it. Since usernames must be unique, users may want to reserve their preferred name early as the rollout expands globally.

Looking Ahead

WhatsApp’s username system represents one of the biggest changes to the platform in recent years. While it promises greater privacy and convenience, its long-term success will depend on balancing user protection with ease of communication. As India remains WhatsApp’s largest market, the company’s discussions with regulators are likely to shape how the feature evolves in the future.
