India’s private space sector is preparing for a historic milestone as Skyroot Aerospace gets ready to launch Vikram-1, the country’s first privately built orbital rocket. The maiden mission, named Mission Aagaman, is expected to lift off during the launch window between July 12 and August 4, 2026 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
What Is Vikram-1?
Vikram-1 is a three-stage orbital launch vehicle developed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace. The rocket is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kg into low Earth orbit, serving both Indian and international satellite customers. The mission will validate the rocket’s propulsion systems, guidance, navigation, and stage separation technologies.
A Major Milestone for India’s Private Space Industry
The launch represents the first attempt by an Indian private company to place satellites into orbit. It follows India’s decision to open the space sector to private companies, encouraging startups to develop launch vehicles, satellites, and advanced space technologies alongside ISRO.
Who Else Is Building Private Rockets?
Several Indian startups are now developing next-generation launch systems. Agnikul Cosmos is working on its Agnibaan rocket, while companies such as Bellatrix Aerospace, EtherealX, and other emerging firms are focusing on propulsion systems, reusable rockets, and satellite technologies. Traditional aerospace manufacturers like HAL and Larsen & Toubro are also expanding their role in rocket manufacturing.
Why It Matters
India’s commercial space market is expanding rapidly as demand for small satellite launches continues to grow worldwide. Private launch vehicles can offer dedicated, lower-cost missions for startups, research organizations, and commercial satellite operators, helping India compete with global launch providers.
Looking Ahead
If Mission Aagaman succeeds, Vikram-1 will become a landmark achievement for India’s private aerospace industry. The mission could pave the way for regular commercial launches, attract global customers, and strengthen India’s ambition of becoming a major player in the international space economy.
